Schleich

Towering over other dinosaurs, the terrible T-Rex ran swiftly with long strides.Although it looked menacing, the T-Rex had little use for its short arms which only had two claws and could not reach its mouth. At almost twenty feet high and almost forty feet long, the T-Rex was not a great hunter but a scavenger, eating what other animals or dinosaurs left behind. Even though it had over fifty teeth that were over six inches long, its teeth were not used to chew but to tear since it swallowed its meals in chunks. To have better depth perception in looking for its next meal, the eyes of the T-Rex were both pointed forward so that its vision overlapped.Fun Facts: The skull and jaw of the T-Rex were almost as tall as the height of a school bus.

Tips and Tricks:

Review of the Wild Safari Dinos Dilophosaurus

With the release of the movie Jurassic Park, the early Jurassic Theropod Dilophosaurus became quite a familiar sight in dinosaur model series.  Despite the very dubious representation of this member of the Coelophysoidea in the film, Dilophosaurus models have appeared in the Carnegie Collectibles series, Bullyland, Schleich Dinosaurs and recently in the Procon/Collecta range.

One of the newest models of this particular dinosaur is the Wild Safari Dilophosaurus (Safari Ltd of the USA).  This new model is an updated representation of this meat-eating dinosaur and presents Dilophosaurus as a more lithe and agile creature with a long slender tail.  The model measures 17 cm long and the tail makes up half the total length of the model.  This meticulously hand-painted replica contrasts with earlier representations of Dilophosaurus, such as the Carnegie Dinosaur Collectibles range.  In this earlier model, for example, a pair of Dilophosaurs are portrayed together, a homage to the fact that since three fossil skeletons were found in close proximity, Dilophosaurus may have lived in packs.

Getting the Details Right with Dilophosaurus

The Wild Safari Dilophosaurus shows a terrific amount of detail, the neck is much more slender in appearance and the two skull crests (after which this dinosaur is named), are narrow and delicate looking.  These crests are much more accurately reproduced when this particular model is compared with other earlier representations.  The legs are much thinner, although care has been taken to show the musculature and to give the impression of a strong runner.  After all, palaeontologists believe that Dilophosaurus was agile and fast.

The Dilophosaurus Colouration

The model is painted a dark brown pigment with a lighter tan under-body.

The head shows flashes of colour, typical of an animal with crests that were used for visual display.  The flesh covering the anteorbital fenestra is painted blue and the skull crests are a reddish hue.

In the close up view of the head of the Dilophosaurus model, the blue flash on the side of the head can clearly be seen, the crests are also prominent and the fine paintwork around the gaping jaws is revealed.  The distinctive, kinked upper jaw of this particular dinosaur is visible on this replica.

This new addition to the Wild Safari Dinos model series from Safari is perhaps one of the best pocket money models of Dilophosaurus currently available.

As a biologist I couldn’t resist on commenting on how old school (and wrong) the stance is on this model. The “Hunting” T-Rex by the same company is much more in tune with what current thinking is on how dinos in general and T-Rex specifically looked and went around in their daily lives. Read Robert Baker’s milestone book “The Dinosaur Heresies” if you want to really understand why T-Rex didn’t look like this model.

I went back and forth between ordering this T Rex figure and another one, in the end I chose this one and IT IS AMAZING. It’s detail is FANTASTIC. It is really sturdy and has no problem standing on it’s own. Mine is named Ice T-Rex.

My boys are obsessed with T-Rex’s,so we ordered these for them. They play with them all the time. Very realistic, very detailed. Mouth is open – which i s a plus, since these T-Rex’s have “eaten” quite a bit already.
Keep in mind, this is a large model, very solid (it sinks in the water), and quite heavy. I think it would be too heavy for a child under 3 or so.
I expect this dino model will outlast all the others we have. They’ve been in the bathtub MULTIPLE times, and the paint still looks new, unlike others.
